What are geocoins?

Geocoins are used in the outdoor game called geocaching. Geocaching is a sport where you use a GPS device to find “geocaches” in the great outdoors. When you are out “caching” in the woods you may discover a metal coin inside the geocache you were seeking out. Give yourself a high five! You just found a geocoin. Geocoins have a unique “tracking code” engraved on it, which make them trackable at Geocaching.com, the company that runs this outdoor game.

Awesome, so why would I want to buy a geocoin?

Two reasons:
1. To start, or add to, a geocoin collection that you store at home.
2. To activate at geocaching.com and release into the wild!

What is geocoin collecting?

First off, let’s first talk about what “geocoin collecting” is NOT. When you find a geocoin in a geocache, like in the example above, know that these coins are NOT for collecting! These geocoins are owned by other geocachers. When you find these in geocaches you can “log” that you “discovered” this geocoin at geocaching.com. You may even choose to help that geocoin meet the goal of its owner. Such as, “Travel the world” or “Get moved to a geocache in Montana.” These geocoins are not intended to be “collected” by others, since they are owned by someone else that activated them and sent them into the wild.

I see, so what is geocoin collecting?

Geocoin collecting is the act of purchasing new, unactivated, geocoins from various places (like from Hagglecoins.com) and then storing them in a collection at home. Many geocoins are very valuable. Because of this, some geocachers never actually activate and release their purchased coins into the wild. Instead, they keep them in collections at home. Geocoin collectors may collect a certain type of geocoin: such as animal-themed coins, country-themed designs, event coins, or various others. Geocoin collectors may also collect coins from certain designers that they follow.
